Why Should I Bring My Baby to the Dentist’s Office?

While the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for their first dental visit by the age of one, many parents start taking their little one to the dentist’s office at six months. This is typically around the time that babies begin to teethe, allowing Dr. Joe to provide parents with helpful tips to ease their discomfort.

When Should My Baby First Go to the Dentist’s Office?

As stated above, professional organizations like the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for their first dental visits by the time they turn one year old, or whenever their first tooth erupts. These early visits ensure that your child’s mouth is developing properly.

What Happens During Baby’s First Dental Checkup

These early visits are an important way to establish the dental office as a positive, fun place for your baby. Dr. Joe will sit down with you and ask about any issues you’ve been noticing, like teething habits they’ve adopted, and answer any lingering questions you may have. He’ll then conduct an oral examination, typically while your baby is in your lap, where they’ll feel most comfortable.

Because their teeth will have started to erupt by this time, or will be erupting very soon, we’ll also teach you how you can clean them to prevent cavities. If your little one drinks from a baby bottle, we can also provide tips to avoid baby bottle tooth decay as well as speak about best practices for pacifier usage. Before you leave, our front desk staff will schedule your child’s next appointment for six months out.
